About the ArtistI have been involved in the art community for the majority of my life. My first college degree was in art and art history and subsequent degrees allowed me to teach in the public school system. I have taught art in the Bagley Elementary School, Bagley High School and the Bemidji Middle School. After 12 years of teaching art, I decided to take a break and pursue a life-long dream of being a professional artist. In 1993 I had the opportunity to go to a workshop presented by a nationally known artist. It was at this workshop that my interest in the Chiaroscuro style of painting had its birth. Since that time the majority of my work has been in this style. In 1994 I opened a working studio in Bagley, MN with goals of having a place to work and produce my art while providing a place for area artists to meet, work and display their art. I continued to operate that studio and teach part-time. In 2006, I decided to retire from my teaching in the classroom after 18 years of experience. Today I paint in my studio in my home, located between Shevlin, MN and Itasca State Park.

"My love for things from the past, especially family heirlooms, has led me to explore my Scandinavian heritage by creating aesthetically pleasing works of art. The manner in which light falls on these objects influences how we perceive them and leads the viewer through the carefully arranged Still Life.” – Ruth Ann Nordlund
